As part of the Places of Worship project, we have been carrying out a photographic survey of the Hackney buildings included in the project’s survey. These will be added to the Religion and Place website, which already includes photos of all the Tower Hamlets buildings. Here are some examples of photos which show the fascinating array of places of worship in Hackney:

St Chad's Church
On Saturday 21st February all our volunteers met for the first time for a training day held at the Geffrye Museum. The day was a real success and included presentations from the Building Exploratory, English Heritage and the Churches Conservation Trust. Volunteers were instructed on how to carry out the surveys and led through how to complete the survey worksheets. The afternoon provided the opportunity for volunteers to test out the forms in situ with visits to St Chad’s and St Leonard’s Churches.

Welcome to the Places of Worship 2009 Blog Pages
In partnership with English Heritage and the Churches Conservation Trust, the Building Exploratory is undertaking an investigation of the condition, use and significance of listed places of worship across Hackney and Tower Hamlets. Working with a team of committed volunteers we aim to record the condition of 70 listed places of worship in the two boroughs. This survey forms part of a national strategy aimed at better understanding the condition of places of worship.
This blog is an opportunity to stay up to date with the project and for volunteers to share their ideas and experiences. Please feel free to leave any comments below. If you have any photographs you would like to share please e-mail them to the Building Exploratory and we will upload them.
